ABN income explained

What it means to have an ABN

An Australian Business Number (ABN) identifies you as operating a business or enterprise. Having an ABN allows you to invoice clients, operate under a business name and register for GST if required.

Employees vs sole traders

Employees have tax withheld by their employer before they receive their pay. Sole traders are responsible for managing their own tax. No tax is withheld from ABN invoices unless a withholding agreement is in place — which means you need to set money aside throughout the year.

How ABN income is taxed

ABN income is declared in your individual tax return. It is added to any other income you earned during the year and taxed at your marginal rate. Legitimate business expenses are deducted before the tax is calculated.

Setting aside tax throughout the year

A common rule of thumb is to set aside 25–30% of your gross ABN income for tax, depending on your total income and expenses. Ibex Tax Consultants can help you estimate your tax liability early so there are no surprises at lodgement time.

What expenses can you claim?

Sole traders can deduct genuine business expenses from their ABN income. The key rule is that the expense must be incurred in earning your business income — not personal or private.

GST and BAS considerations

The $75,000 GST threshold

If your annual turnover reaches $75,000, you are required by law to register for GST. Once registered, you must charge GST on your sales, lodge regular BAS statements and remit the net GST to the ATO.

Crossing the threshold

If you expect to exceed $75,000 in turnover in a 12-month period, you must register within 21 days. Ibex Tax Consultants monitors this for clients and will alert you when registration is approaching.

Voluntary GST registration

If your turnover is below $75,000, you can still register voluntarily. This may be worthwhile if your clients are businesses that can claim back the GST, or if you have significant input tax credits to recover.

Need BAS support?

If you are registered for GST, your BAS is due quarterly, monthly or annually depending on your turnover and lodgement history. Ibex Tax Consultants can prepare, review and lodge your BAS on your behalf.
