What is Single Touch Payroll?

Single Touch Payroll (STP) is the ATO's system for receiving payroll information directly from employers each time they run a pay event. Instead of waiting until the end of the year for payment summaries, the ATO receives employee tax and super data in real time.

Who needs STP?

All employers — including those with only one employee — are required to report through STP. This applies whether you pay weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Why it matters

STP reporting keeps the ATO's records aligned with your payroll. Errors or omissions can trigger ATO enquiries. Employees can also see their year-to-date income and tax figures in myGov, so accuracy matters from the first pay event.
